Bulletin 2026 Week 11
This week Iāll be hosting GlasgowJS with a talk from Ian Gregson on āThe big red diffā about refactoring out services from your codebase. Come along and join us! The following week we have Sara Vieira speaking at EdinburghJS. There are lots of events across Scotland this week, with Dundee holding several cyber careers talks.
John Glover wrote a piece looking at the latest Techscaler and Codebase report. Since their numbers are getting scrutiny I thought Iād take the opportunity to lay out a little about how Scottish Technology Club runs:
I (Jamie) took over the Edinburgh and Glasgow JavaScript meetups after Covid, as both were scheduled for deletion from Meetup. I ran those, and decided I wanted to tie the meetups together and take a grassroots approach to community building. I started this weekly bulletin, and opened up our STC Discord server. There are now a few thousand members of the JavaScript groups, approx 800 in our Discord, and a few hundred receive the bulletin directly by email. The JS meetups were initially funded by me, plus a few corporate sponsors (typically it costs around Ā£300 to sponsor an event). When we first took over the meetups we claimed for the Scottish Government Ecosystem support fund, which helped groups re-establish after Covid, then the Glasgow City Council fund for events. The rest of the money has come from sponsors, patreon supporters and voluntary ticket contributions. I cover the shortfall via my web consultancy business, Telaco. I link directly to events and content, and try to help build up other initiatives. The strength of a community is in the network, not in any one hub. Iām keen to do what I can to bring opportunities to people living in Scotland to build, learn and play with technology. If you are interested in helping out - GlasgowJS is currently looking for a sponsor!
